ADD ADHD Drug Addiction
An ADD ADHD drug addiction has become an increasing problem in the past decade, exposing our youth as well as young adults to an increased risk of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, paranoia and bipolar disorder.
The lure - and danger - of ADD ADHD drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall is that these drugs have amphetamines that produce a temporary feeling of euphoria. But for those who abuse these drugs, the end result is depression and an extreme lack of energy once the drug is gone from your system. Then the abuser is tempted to take even more of the medication, which will eventually lead to an ADD ADHD drug addiction.
An Increase in Abuse
According to Ryan Grim, author of This Is Your Country on Drugs: The Secret History of Getting High in America , during the ten-year period between 1992 and 2002, prescriptions for these drugs - both for adults and children - grew between 250 and 657 percent in the United States depending on the study you choose.
How Abuse Can Harm
Drugs like Ritalin affect the central nervous system. The short-term effects of abusing these drugs include an inability to sleep or eat, vomiting, heart palpitations, elevation of blood pressure, skin rashes, stomach pains and even seizures that could lead to death.
Abuse these drugs over a long term, and the potential effects include mental disorders later in life, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, hallucinations and paranoia. Physical effects include heart murmurs, muscle seizures, heart attacks and obsessive habits like hand-wringing.Higher doses of these drugs can lead to sexual dysfunctions such as erectile disorder.
Increasingly Easy Access
The explosion of prescriptions for these drugs means a higher circulation of these medications in the schools. Kids can get these medications from ADHD-diagnosed kids in dorm rooms, cafeterias or the school bus.
Plus, with the rise of the internet and the huge increase of online pharmacies, it's extremely easy to get these drugs without a prescription. And while kids aren't likely to order these drugs online - most don't have credit cards - ease of access means a larger number of pills available for these kids to steal or obtain from a willing adult, making an ADD ADHD drug addiction more likely.
