Drug Addiction Signs

Drug addiction signs are crucial to recognize, and could help save the life of your child or spouse. Abusers may be able to hide their drug habits for awhile, but in the end, addiction becomes a monster that takes over.

The more you take drugs, the more accustomed your body becomes to them, and the harder it is to get that same high you once got. The stronger the addiction, the more important drugs become, eclipsing everything else you once held dear, including school, work, family and friends.

Signs of an addiction problem will include neglect of these once-important things, as well as physical and emotional changes, depending on the drug being abused.

What Drug?

The changes you will notice depend on the type of drug being abused. If your spouse is using cocaine or methamphetamine, drug addiction signs could include a speeding up of everything - talking at a rapid rate, losing weight for no reason, unusually high amounts of energy and being unable to sleep.

An abuse of marijuana on the other hand includes sluggish speech and actions, confusion and disorientation.

An addict needing a fix may show increased irritability and may even become violent. Other signs include apathy, depression, temporary psychosis and hallucinations.

Worried About Your Teen?

Watch for marked changes in the way your teen looks and behaves. Is he or she hanging out with a new crowd of friends? Are grades dropping? Is your child skipping classes? Is your son wearing long sleeved shirts all the time? If so, he may be trying to hide needle marks.

Signs of suspected drug abuse also include money and valuables disappearing as well as prescription meds. Count the pills in your bottle. Are they being used up too quickly?

Someone with excessive nosebleeds or sinusitis may be snorting cocaine. Likewise, a teen with a persistent cough and recurring bronchitis may be smoking marijuana. Severe dental problems could be an indication of methamphetamine abuse.
