Drug Addiction Stories

Drug addiction stories can be both heartbreaking, hard to read, and incredibly comforting. One of the best ones I have read is the story of a father who struggled with his son’s addiction to methamphetamines.

Beautiful Boy

Beautiful Boy, written by David Sheff, is a memoir about his oldest son’s more than eight years of addiction to drugs and alcohol. Son Nic got drunk for the first time at twelve, and then began smoking pot before eventually turning to cocaine, heroin and finally methamphetamines.

A Child to Fear

Eventually his son became a stranger and someone to actually fear. Nic stole checks from his parents and forged them, and took money from his younger brother. The thefts took their toll on Sheff and his family.

"Each time Karen or I discover another violation, we are hit anew by a combination of sadness and fury," Sheff writes. "How could he do this? We closed our bank accounts when he forged our names on our checks, canceled credit cards when he stole them."

The Trauma of Drug Addiction

Sheff describes the trauma that drug addiction inflicts on loved ones and family members. Because drug addicts are likely to suffer relapses as they struggle to break free of their addictions, family members often suffer a form of post traumatic stress syndrome, one of the usually unrecognized pains of drug addiction stories.

Those who live with an addict learn to put up their guards and act as if everything is okay while knowing they live with a time bomb. Each day evolves around the moods and decisions of another.

Hiding the Pain

Like many parents of drug addicts, Sheff kept his son's addiction a secret for a long time, not necessarily out of shame, but instead as a way to protect his son's reputation and preserve others' good impression of him.

That silence nearly tore Sheff apart. Plus, the guilt, he said, was nearly overwhelming, and he was haunted by his own prior drug use, tormented with the possibility that it could have led to his own son's addiction.

"Whatever I did was done naively and stupidly and because of my immaturity, but it doesn't matter," he writes. "I blame myself."

Finally Speaking Out

The watershed moment came for Sheff when he began attending AA meetings and hearing drug addiction tales from others. He found support and acceptance and could finally share his own grief and pain. Eventually he came to realize that by rescuing his son each time Nic called, Sheff was actually encouraging his son's addiction.

Beautiful Boy is one of those drug addiction stories you will be glad you read. It is both a comforting book, and a telling tale of the pain and horror of loving a drug addict.
