Drug Addiction Story - One Addict's Story

One drug addiction story that's likely to stay with you for a long, long time is Tweak, the harrowing autobiographical experience of Nic Sheff's recovery from an addiction to meth.

While it is fascinating, Tweak isn't an easy book to read, but it is a revealing tale of a first-hand experience of what it's like to hit rock bottom and the painful crawl back into a normal existence.

The Powerful Lure of Opiates

A drug addiction, like any other addiction, is itself a coping mechanism for dealing with the pain and stresses in one's life. Anytime things get rough, discouraging or even boring, the urge to return to the addiction are powerfully enticing.

So it is with Sheff. A painful breakup with a girlfriend triggers a relapse, and through Sheff's eyes we see first hand the seedy and despairing existence of a methamphetamine relapse.

Not For the Young

This drug addiction story has a great deal of profanity and graphic sexual depictions, which is a pity. Were it not for that, it would be a great book for any youth who mistakenly thinks of drugs as glamorous or cool. Sheff never shies away from the horrors of drug addiction and its often monstrous side effects.

At one point, Sheff gets an injection of meth in his arm with a dirty needle. His arm later becomes infected. When he finally sees a doctor about it, the doctor warns Sheff he might have to amputate his arm.

Learning to Live Drug Free

As he slowly and painfully recovers from his addiction, Sheff struggles to find meaning and pleasure in normal ways that don't require drugs.

And while his books ends on a relatively high note, Sheff's addiction to drugs is far from over. After publishing his book, he recently suffered a relapse. Through his life and his honesty, Sheff shows us the terrible consequences of a young boy who starts smoking pot at thirteen and is never again able to use drugs casually.

As with any addiction story, it is far better to have never started using at all.
