Prescription Drug
Addiction Signs

Prescription drug addiction signs are good to know, whether you suspect a loved one of having a drug addiction, or if you’re beginning to wonder if perhaps you, yourself might be addicted to pain pills. Here are some clues.

Failing Relationships

In his book Pill Head: The Secret Life of a Painkiller Addict, author Joshua Lyon talks about how pills take over your life, eventually replacing every human relationship. If you are losing friends and distancing yourself from family members, those pain pills you are taking every day may be controlling you rather than the other way around.

Are You Taking a Lot More Pills?

One of the signs of a drug addiction is taking a lot more pain pills. Opiates work by flooding your body with chemically produced endorphins. Take them long enough, and your brain will stop producing those endorphins naturally, making injuries hurt far more and requiring a lot more medications to ease the pain. If you are taking more than the recommended dose, you’re very likely addicted.

Are You Neglecting Your Passions?

Another one of the signs of a drug addiction is a decreasing lack of interest in the things you used to be passionate about. Are your grades dropping? Are you in danger of losing your job? These troubles are some of the prescription drug addiction signs.

Are You Taking Crazy Risks?

Are you risking jail time by stealing in order to pay for your drugs? If you are starting to get careless and put your life in danger, such as driving under the influence or practicing unsafe sex, you are likely addicted.

Get Sick When You Stop?

If you stop taking opiates and then experience flu-like symptoms, including nausea, sweating, shaking, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia and depression, it’s likely that you’ve become addicted to opiates.
