Raising Drug Free Children
Raising drug free children is possible, but in this modern society where drugs are prevalent, you must take an active role in preventing a drug addiction. Here are some tips.
Let's Talk
It's so simple, yet so powerfully effective. Take half an hour or more and talk to your kids about the dangers of drugs and how it can ruin your life and your dreams. Parents often feel inept in this area and believe schools can do a far better job of this than they can, but they're wrong.
A California study revealed that even modest parental pressure makes a huge difference in whether children would smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol or abuse drugs. Typically, in cases where children were abusing drugs, they reported a perception that their parents did not care. So show you care by letting your kids know you don't tolerate smoking, drinking or drugs and explain why.
Look for Warning Signs and Act When Needed
They can include alcohol or tobacco on their breath, frequent and lengthy absences away from home, a drop in grades, money and valuables disappearing and a change in behavior. If you suspect drugs, confront your child immediately. If there is a problem, tackle it head on and get help as soon as possible.
Don't ignore the situation and hope it goes away. it won't, but will only get worse. Instead, act immediately. If necessary, put your child in a drug rehab program right away. Also, don't wallow in false guilt. This is not the time for a pity party. Focus on your child, not you.
Learn about Drugs Yourself
Learn about the different types of drugs out there and the dangers they pose. Then educate your children as well.
Set Limits with Love
Let your children know that you will always love them no matter what, but also make it clear that your family does not tolerate those who do drugs. Period.
Instill Faith in Your Children
One of the most powerful healing forces in treating a drug addiction is a belief in a power greater than oneself, namely God. So wouldn't it make sense that a relationship with God will keep a drug addiction out of your child's life? Teach your kids to turn to God when they have problems instead of drugs.
Be a Role Model
A powerful way of raising drug free children is to show them you practice what you preach. Children will follow your actions more than your words every time.
If you smoke, chances are good that so will your kids. If you need a drink to help you unwind or become more lively at social gatherings, your kids will get the message that alcohol is a good way to make you more outgoing.
And if you use prescription drugs freely for every ill that comes along, your kids will get the message it's okay to self-medicate for their problems.
