Rehabilitation for Drug Addiction

Rehabilitation for drug addiction is the crucial first step in recovering from a drug addiction, providing the addict with the skills he needs to live a sober life.

Do I Really Need Rehab?

For most addictions, the answer is a resounding yes, and especially if you are addicted to opiates, such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines or prescription pain medications.

For those addicted to prescription pain medications, the intense emotional and physical pain felt during withdrawal is so intense that most addicts return to the drug unless they are in rehab.

What is Rehabilitation for Drug Addiction Like?

You will go through a period of complete abstinence from the drug while your body detoxifies. If you are addicted to an opiate, you will be given either Methadone or Buprenorphine to help alleviate the intense cravings.

Until the drugs are completely gone from your system, you will be unable to think clearly and move on in your recovery process. Then you will take classes on addiction, participate in group counseling, get involved in a 12-step program and go through individual counseling.

Other Benefits of Rehab

One of the consequences of drug addiction is you become completely isolated from friends and family. You are left feeling like you are the only one who has this problem. But in rehab, you get to know others who are also struggling with a drug addiction.

In group therapy you share your experiences in-depth and, as a result, begin to develop close relationships with others. These friends know what you are going through and will help hold you accountable for your recovery.

Learning to Live Without Drugs

Another benefit of rehab is you learn how to live your life without drugs. As an addict, your life was filled with the sole purpose of finding drugs and getting high. In rehab, you learn how to fulfill your life in other ways. It helps you to find joy in a normal, productive way.
