Treatments for Drug Addiction

The treatments for drug addiction are varied, but all are necessary for a full recovery from an addiction to drugs. Here are some of the crucial ones:

Desire

Not only must you get help from other sources, but you must also want to get well and be willing to do the work needed to get well. A recovery from drug addiction is not something others can do for you. It is something you must take the initiative to do for yourself.

Twelve-Step Program

One of the crucial treatments for drug addiction is the twelve-step program, a set of principles originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. The twelve steps include admitting you have an addiction you cannot control, recognizing there is a higher power (God), and that you cannot recover without God's help, and examining your past and learning from your errors.

The other steps include making amends for the errors you have made, learning to live a new, drug-free lifestyle, and then helping others recover from their addiction.

Rehab

While a rehab is not the end-all of recovering from a drug addiction, it is a crucial part of your healing from a drug addiction. The benefit of a rehab is it can jump-kick the process of recovery by providing you a safe place to detox. Without abstinence you are never going to recover. A rehab center can provide that as well as provide counseling and often-needed prescription medications.

Prescription Medications

These treatments for drug addiction are especially important when you are recovering from an opiate addiction, such as heroin, cocaine or prescription pain killers. Medicines such as Methadone and Buprenorphine will help ease the intense cravings addicts frequently experience when coming off of opiates.

Faith

Recovering from a drug addiction will be virtually impossible without realizing you cannot beat an addiction without turning to God. Simply put, addicts cannot recover from an addiction in their own strength.

Root Issues

An addict will frequently turn to drugs to blot out the pain of living - and suffer a relapse when life gets stressful. That's why it's so crucial to seek therapy and learn the root issues of what causes so much stress in your life; and how you can ease that stress without turning to drugs.
