Over 600,000 people over the age of 12 were using inhalants like glue, paint thinner, ether or nitrous oxide. Another 200,000 people were using heroin.
How Old Were They
US drug addiction statistics show that the largest percentage of those using drugs - 21.5 percent or roughly 4.3 million of the total users - were between the ages of 18 and 20. Men Versus Women
Men were more likely to abuse illicit drugs than women - 9.9 percent of all males as opposed to 6.3 percent of all females. But when it came to the use of non-medical, psychotherapeutic drugs such as pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, methamphetamines and sedatives, men and women had a similar rate of use.
What About Education
Adults who had graduated from college were more likely to have tried illicit drugs in their lifetime when compared with adults who had not completed high school. The rate of current illicit drug use declined from 9.3 percent in 2007 to 8.1 percent in 2008 among adults who had not completed high school.
